Day Twelve - December Harvest

We interrupt the regularly scheduled countdown to Christmas for Soybean Harvest Part II

With 130 acres of soybeans left to harvest, when the puddles froze over and frost was in the ground, it's time for the combine, tractors and wagons to head out into the field without risking future crops from soil compaction in this wet, wet clay that couldn't dry out in the rainy weather we have had all fall this year. My husband worked all day yesterday combining the beans, only to go into work last night for a 12 hour overnight shift at a fertilizer plant, before heading back out to the field the morning to try and beat the forecasted warm up.

The beans are at around 20% moisture right now, which is far above the 12-13% the mill wants (and will charge a drying charge to get them down to the right moisture content). Thankfully a neighbour has offered the use of their drying bin to help alleviate some of the drying costs.

The only upside to the warm up in the weather is that hubby will be able to join us this weekend in our annual Christmas tree foraging, and then get back to harvesting the beans sometime next week when the weather gets cold again.
